I picked up "Signing for Dummies" and looked on the net too.
If you have Comcast, they have some signing On Demand too.
We didn't do a class, but I also didn't do it hardcore. I just wanted to allow us to be able to communicate enough so she wouldn't throw fits. It worked well.
She is talking up a storm now, but if she really wants something she will still sign while saying the word. Especially if you don't give her more ASAP.
There is a link somewhere with little videos, all free. I was lazy - waited til 11 months and within weeks voila. All we ever did were the basics:
hungry (fingers together touching the mouth)
more (we did thumbs and fingers all pointing together, like your hands make two circles and they join together, come back, join together.)
milk (squeezing a fist)
diaper change (wipe hands in the air)
We tried all done but my son would tap his fingers on the tray so we just went with that, and my girl i can't remember.
It's honestly as simple or hard, expensive or free as you want to make it. The later you wait the faster and easier it'll be! Some parents start at 2-3 months and I feel sorry for them because at the very earliest the baby will do them at 9 months or so.
Re: Baby sign language???
I know they are offered through the community ed classes where we live, I knew the teacher and just met her for a private class.
We just watched a DVD that our DCP had and started there. So far DD knows about 15 signs. We love it! I believe this is the DVD we used: https://www.amazon.com/Sign-your-Baby-Language-Captioned/dp/1932354026

you must get the dvd series of Baby Signing time. DD still watches it to this day.
I kid you not, she was up to 40 signs before she could speak. We loved it and I learned the signs too!
