The Little Mermaid names

Ariel, the little mermaid, was originally a boys name (Hebrew - lion of God)

And these were her sisters.

Aquata - (couldn't find this as a name, thank goodness)
Andrina - fem. of Andew
Arista - Latin - ear of corn and name of a star in the constellation, Virgo
Attina - (coudn't find this as a name)
Adella - Adela was closest, and is Latin for noble
Alana - fem. of Alan

Aquata, seriously? I guess they wanted Ariel to sound really good.

Re: The Little Mermaid names

  • DD and I just watched part of this movie yesterday and I thought the same thing about Aquata.  I figured it was youneek and made-up for the movie!

  • Loading the player...
  • My fav movie!  I could not help but read each sister's name and sing - Aquata - ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaa!
  • Well, Sebastian is a pretty nice name in that movie, yet a friend of mine who named her DS this gets grief from her SIL about it reminding her of The Little Mermaid.

Hahahaha...I did the same thing when I was writing it!

And I didn't even think about the other names...

King Triton, Eric, Sebastian, Vanessa, Ursula, Carlotta, Grimbsy, Louis, Flotsam, Jetsam, Scuttle, Flounder

Granted, some of these are pet names, but I bet there's a least one Jet Sam out there...or rather, Jett Sam. :)

  • Loved that movie as a kid. Was singing along too. We plan to use Adela in some variation for #2, but not b/c of the little mermaid. Its my Great Grandmother's name.
  • well... I am sure Aquata just came from the word aqua.. meaning water.  And they needed another 1 name
