Cluster Feeding...

Every night G gets fussy around 8pm....I feed her and she is still fussy plus this is the only time that she pulls and yanks at the boobies and fusses while eating..ughhh it kills me....than around 9:15 I feed her again and we go through the same thing and than again at about 11:00 (which she is calm for this feeding), to where she finally passes out until about 3am....

She never fusses during the day or pulls at the boobs...she only does this at her 8pm or so feedings....Why is this?

It is a hard couple of hours for me....I am trying to find ways to stop it. Any suggestions? Should I give her a formula bottle at 8pm and let me boobs fill up more with milk and give her the boob at her 11 pm feedling?

She is a good eater and never needed formula before, but I assume she is not getting enough from me and that is why she is pulling and fussing around that time.

I am blank here and do not know what else to try....

Re: Cluster Feeding...

  • I should also add that she never cluster feeds during the day, she eats about every 2-3 hours, but from 8pm-11pm she wants to stay on the boob the whole time....

  • Babies go through phases- you might find that next week is totally different.  She is around that "fussy" age- and it is normally worse in the evenings.

Whatever you do, I would not supplement with formula, especially if you to continue to EBF.  This will deplete your supply.  I would speak with your pedi before doing anything like that.

Hayden still can be fussy at the breast- sometimes she just needs a good burp, other times she is just "fussy"- I imagine it will pass- hang in there!

  • K does the same thing.  She's fussy and wants to be at the boob from 6:30-8:30 or 9.  Drives me crazy.  But she usually sleeps through the night, except for last night.  Usually I just power through it.  You could try to giver her a bottle of breast milk.

I pump in the morning, after her first feeding, and you can save that in the fridge until the nighttime craziness.

    I know how you feel!

This!  Anytime you supplement your supply is at risk for decreasing.  If you are going to give her a bottle, you will still have to pump at the 8 p.m., feeding.  I had to supplement LO because he was born preemie and couldn't suck, but my pedi told me to pump every hour - 2 to mimic his feedings so that I didn't let my supply decrease.  Plus this way I was able to supplement with BM exclusively and never needed to use formula.
