How many ear infections until tubes are needed?

I think DD has another ear infection.  Eugh.  She went to the pedi a few days ago for croup.  How many ear infections did your DC have before they were referred to an ENT?

I think it depends slightly on your pedi...but mine said 5 ear infections and it warrants a discussion.  I think DS had 6-7 infections before the tubes were actually put in about a month ago. 

It took forever to get an appointment with the ENT and actually get the surgery scheduled.  They must have the best work schdule ever ...seems like they work 4 days a month!

DD had 6 or 7 this winter. The pedi mentioned it but he said he wanted to see if it was related to starting preschool and being exposed to all those new germs. Plus w/ summer around the corner, he wanted to see if she got better on her own. If she continues (ed - fingers crossed, it's been a little while) this summer, then we would look at tubes.

After the 4th ear infection I asked about tubes and the Dr. said it was too early to think about those, but after the 5th ear infection she asked me "Have you thought about seeing an ENT?"!!!  So by the time the tubes were in he was on ear infection #6 in 6 months.  That was January and we haven't had one since.  It was a fast and easy procedure for my little guy.  Good luck!

After my DS 4th ear infection I asked about tubes and she told me it was too early to think about them.  But after the 5th ear infection she asked "Have you thought about seeing an ENT?"!!  So by the time the tubes were in he was on #6 in 6 months!  Best decision ever!  Good luck!

Our pediatrician recommended a consult for tubes after 4 infections in a year.  The first ENT laughed at me and said the criteria was 6 in a year, pronounced DS's ears "perfect" and sent us on our way.  Two ear infections and one febrile seizure from the high temp from the infection later and we had another consultation with a different ENT who got DS in for tubes immediately.  I am still mad at the first ENT for dismissing us so quickly.  Ditto PPs who said it was the best decision ever.

Our pediatrician referred us to an ENT after six in less than a year. Really, she was getting them every month.  It felt like as soon as she got over one, we were right back at the pedi office. She had tubes last August and has been ear infection free ever since!
