When did you introduce the sippy cup?

I read in one of my books that you can start an afternoon sippy cup at 6 months. This seems a bit early to me??

Re: When did you introduce the sippy cup?

  • LO didn't know what to do with it until he was about 7 months old. And it wasn't until I bought the Nuby kind with the silicone spout (highly recommend it!) that he finally drank from it. Now he uses it mostly to chew on the spout but he also drinks, with a little help from me. It's still a work in progress.

  • We "introduced" the sippy at 6 months. Like others he had no idea what to do with it until about 7 months. But last night I gave it to him and he cried when I took it away! He thinks its is treat since I am so inconsistant.

We also have the nuby with the handles. I tried giving him the first years toss kind for daycare but he won't use it.

  • We started at 6 months, and like the others have said, it's a work in progress.  DD actually does better with the straw type bottles - Nuby makes one that is a straw with the no leak valve and the curling handles that she loves.
  • II actually didn't buy one until she was 9 months old & for the first few weeks she just chewed on it. Then one day I waited until she was really hungry & gave it to her & she figured it out.

  • 6 months. He loves it!
  • Raquel figured it out a few weeks ago. Some days she's really into drinking from it...other days not so much. I do notice she'll drink from it more on warmer days.

Gave him an empty one around 6 months so he could get used to it. Started putting a few ounces of water in there a month or so ago.
  • We gave V one around 6-7 months and she took to it right away. I was surprised. Now, she does play with it more than she does a bottle but she is starting to play with the bottles also.
  • I gave Margaux the kind with a straw and handles when she was about 6 months, with a little water in it.  She didn't figure out what to do with it for a while, but she loved watching the water slosh around when she shook it.  Now she sips water from it like a champ.  We haven't tried a non-straw sippy cup yet.
