Where do cashiers learn to bag?

When I was a cashier they taught us how to bag and, well, it seems to be pretty much commom sense. Why, why, why do they keep putting non-perishables like soap, air fresheners (non aeresol), etc with food? Am I the only one who gets annoyed by this? It's not at one specific place either.

  • Oh and why do they put cans on top of my grapes and put the bread in with the heavy stuff?

This is totally my pet peeve.  I have told them I will bag my own to avoid some people doing it.  We have the mentally challenged people who work at our stores and while I support the effort and some are really great.  One kid is so happy and enthused, you can help but be glad to talk to him.  I do actively avoid the blind guy because I get home, and I have a fish covered mango being squashed by a two liter.

  • I hate how some people bag groceries. It drives me batty. I use these fabric totes from Landsend that are huge and strong and the baggers almost always but ALL the heavy stuff in one bag. Yes, they are huge and won't break, but if you put every single heavy item in one bag I can barely carry it in the house!

  • Ugh, the heavy stuff on squashable/breakable stuff kills me too! Mothereffer. Seriously not that hard. MJ, that sounds like a fun job. :-) I do have to say I was mean sometimes and learned to break eggs w/o trying, squash bread from the bottom, etc. Sooooo .... it's prob just karma. ;-)

  • Drives me crazy!  When I was a cashier we had "classes".  I was at the store the other day and the cashier (who happened to be male) was putting so many things into the bags they were breaking.  When I asked him to make them lighter because I was 9 months pregnant, he looks at me and hands me the broken bag and says "it's only cereal"  good thing there was a manager around because she saw my smoke coming out of my ears and came to help out.
