How long does formula last?

How long does a large thing (24 oz.) of powdered formula last? Or do you know how many ounces are in a scoop? I plan on breastfeeding but purchased a thing of formula "just in case" based on several recommendations from family and it was $23 for 24 oz. I knew formula was expensive but goodness! Does that last a couple days or a couple weeks?

Re: How long does formula last?

  • It depends on if you exclusively FF, and how often your LO eats.  For Ethan they last a couple days.  But we didnt start FF'ing until 8 months when he weaned himself.

  • Depending on how much LO eats I believe they can go through a can a week or more...definitely more when they get a little bigger but aren't eating solids.  Name brand formula is VERY expensive.

  • 1 scoop = 2 oz of water
  • It should say on the package, but each scoop is normally added to 2oz of water.

I'm not 100% sure how many ounces of formula are in that scoop......

  • once we switched to 100% formula we'd use one container per week.  at costco they cost about $25/container so we'd spend $100 a month on formula.
  • One "scoop" of powder Gerber Goodstart formula is 8.7 grams or .31oz and makes 1 2oz bottle. So if my math is correct a 25.7 ounce can of powder formula will make 82 2oz bottles. Newborns eat every 2-4 hours so in theory a 25.7 ounce can of formula would last about 10 days.

  • If you are BF and FF as a supplement then it all depends on how often your LO eats and how much.

Be careful though, if I am not mistaken once you open the can they only last a month... so if you are not going through the whole thing you may want to consider buying a smaller can.

With DS we FF exclusively. We always got the 12.8oz cans because I used coupons for those and they turned out to be way cheaper. We could get about 90 fl oz per can. So if you are buying the 24oz can, then you should be able to get about 180 fl oz out of it.

  • For an exclusive FF, one 24oz can a week is typical.  You'll probably go through a little more right around 4-5mo when LO is bigger but not eating a lot of solids yet.
