LO choked last night

It was the scariest feeling ever. She keeps trying to get into Cody's (our pomeranian) food, so when she was sitting in the kitchen playing while I made dinner last night I put his food on the counter. When we all sat down to eat I put his food back down since she was in her highchair..well I took her out to clean her seat off since there is usually some food she drops and I sat her on the floor. My dog has this weird habit of taking a mouthful of food and then spitting it out onto the floor and eating it off the floor?!? So within a split second Leah grabbed a piece of food and stuck it in her mouth and started choking..eyes watering, face changing colors and everything. I had to stick my finger down her throat and like fish hook it out of there. I reacted a lot better than I thought I would since I have always been scared something like that would happen (not with dog food of course) but she thought it was quite funny after the fact..mommy did not.

OMG! I am glad she is okay. I am sorry, I bet that was very scary.

For future reference if your LO is choking you should not stick your finger down the throat to move the object. You should always pound on the back first (turn LO over on your lap). In some cases trying to remove the object can result in just getting it more stuck. I understand thought in the moment you just go on instinct.

  • Oh wow...I am glad your LO is okay!  This is also a fear of mine, that DD will choke on something.  Also, my dog does this with her food too.  It's weird.

I know that, which is what I can't get over..my sister teaches infant CPR and safety classes and always told me to turn her upside down and pound her back or if they are younger babies to lay their belly over your arm and do the same thing so I have no idea why I reacted the way I did, I think I was just freaking out and it actually took me a minute to realize what was happening because she was coughing at first and then stopped and wasn't making any noise..it was just really scary and I actually reacted faster than DH who has to renew certifications in those things for his job?!
