Success after IF

What did/would you do for toddler room-nursery?

I have a (almost) 2 year old. I am also 5 months pg. Our current plan is to move toddler into new room with toddler bed and put baby in current nursery in the crib.  Our toddler is very tall and we were thinking of just getting him a twin bed with a guard rail instead of a toddler bed to save money.  We are having another boy and were just going to use all the current baby bedding/sheets, etc in the baby nursery and not change much at all (we're strapped financially).

I was telling this to a friend today and she couldn't believe I wasn't going to get the new baby new bedding, etc.

My question is: What would you do?  Do you think it's wise to just move toddler into the new room with a big boy bed and keep the baby nursery the way it is? Did you buy toddler bed, or a twin?

Not sure what to or how to go about doing this the most cost effective way.

Thanks for your thoughts! :)

Re: What did/would you do for toddler room-nursery?

  • I can't believe someone gave you a ration for not doing a new baby room.

WHY on earth spend that $$ if you don't need to?

    Crazy.

We did make a new nursery with a same gendered second child but it was because we made the first nursery a non-nursery with realistic looking fish and an underwater theme.

If it had been baby decor I think we probably would have used it for the baby and made a new "big boy" room.

And... you're smart to skip the toddler bed.

    They're a scam.

You'll get more use out of going straight to a twin with rails.

If the height makes you nervous you can always start off with the mattress on the floor, no frame and no box spring until later.

Ignore your friend and do what makes sense for your family.

I frankly can't believe she's even got an opinion on it!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • we didn't have a nursery in our old house - well we had an area, but not a dedicated room.

we didn't do a nursery in our new hourse because I still bedshare with DS who is almost 17m.

We put him to his own bed last week, but we are still having to sleep with him (for now).  He did one night on his own.

We got a queen bed for him.  just put it on the ground so it was low to the ground since he is younger than your son.

I think it is fine not to do bedding for DC#2.  We got new crib bedding (and hope baby likes the cribs....), but we are having a girl.

  • DS is tall so we thought a toddler bed was not worth it...
  • Absolutely go with the twin bed.  My Mom recommends just puting the mattress on the floor until they get used to a 'real' bed.

I am sorry that people are giving you crap about now making a whole new nursery for #2.  I think that doing it the way you want to is definitely the most economical and probably the most reasonable way to do it.  However, the irrational side of me keeps thinking that when we have #2 (crossing fingers) I should make a new nursery...  Not sure why.

    Nothing to see here....
  • DH and I were actually talking about this very thing yesterday.  If I am blessed enough to get pg again soon, we plan on just using the nursery the way it is.  The wall color and bedding is not gender specific, but if we have a boy we will just change out the decor.

I think it is very smart to just leave the nursery for the baby and move your toddler.  We actually plan on buying good quality furniture that will last until baby moves out.  Reagan's current furniture cost a little more, but it is well constructed and will last a long time.  The bed converts to a double.  If we get pg, we will give that furniture to the new baby and buy Reagan another quality set, probably with a double bed.  Even though it may cost more now, I think in the long run it saves money.

  • When the time comes what I'd like to do is move Nicholas into the guest room and have him use the bed in that room (queen) and we will be doing a NY Yankees themed room.   We got all the Yankee stuff in his closet just waiting to come out.

  • We will be moving when the new baby comes so everyone is getting a new room but if we stayed I would have kept the nursery the same for the new baby and moved DS into a big boy room.  Why buy new stuff for 2 rooms when you can just do 1?  And definitely keep the same bedding for the new baby, it is crazy to buy new stuff unless it is obviously for the other sex, especially if you are strapped for cash.

  • I left Katen in her room and made a new room for the baby. However I used most of our old bedding, etc and added a few new touches too. I have two girls though.

Katen did get a new bed and Ana got Katen's old crib.
