Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Solids for a 10 month old

I know this question is asked so much so I appreciate any responses I get.  At DD's 9 month appt our pedi gave us the go ahead to start her on pretty much anything.  She told us not to feed seafood, shellfish, milk or eggs.  I am seeing so many of you that feed your babies egg yolks or even whole eggs.  I guess it's a pedi's preference but I'm wondering why they say no eggs.  I'm planning to call my pedi with these questions but I wanted to see what you ladies had to say about what to feed.  I read in a previous post that frozen waffles, french toast and pancakes are favorites for breakfast. I honestly never even thought about this.  Do you still feed LO jar baby food or just solids that you make?

Thanks ladies!  I appreciate your input!

Re: Solids for a 10 month old

  • I think they say no eggs because of food allergies.

I give my 11 month old eggs; she loves them. There are no food allergies in our families, so I'm not worried and am fine with my decision. Sometimes for breakfast, she'll eat half of a stage 3 jar of something, but most of the time she'll have what we're having.

  • That's what I was thinking.  I tend to get stressed trying to make sure she is getting a well balanced meal 3 times a day plus bottles.

  • We really don't do any purees anymore. She prefers to pick things up and eat them. We do egg yolks. Our pedi said so whites until 1 due to allergies. I would just try a few things and see what she like. LO loves pancakes. I just tear itup in small pieces.

  • At 10m we were pretty much fully transitioned to all table foods (no honey, though, and we've chosen not to do any nuts and shellfish). We hadn't started milk yet until 11m, mixed with her formula.

In my experience listening to other moms and talking to my own pedi, pediatricians are ALL over the map with advice on this stuff. Some seem to have no clue what the current AAP recommendations are. I try to follow that.

  • In regards to frozen breakfast foods, like waffles, watch for sugar content. I may be more careful about that than others, but it's amazing how much sugar is hiding in some stuff. Eggo and Kashi make whole wheat waffles that my DD loves...they're a little bit lower in sugar.

I fried up an egg yolk for DD's lunch today, and she loved it.  The AAP recommends no egg whites until 1 year because the kid could be allergic to it.  DD started refusing all purees when she hit 9 months, so she only gets finger foods and formula.
  • ditto pp's it is b/c of allergies however the latest aap recs & research show that there aren't really any foods you need to wait on except honey & whole milk unless there is a family history of allergies. My LOs have gotten whole eggs & berries since abotu 8 1/2 or 9 months.

also ditto the frozen stuff & sugar, i just get the mini pancakes or whole wheat ones & don't give them very much anyway, and only maybe 2-3 times a week, I have baked bran muffins & frozen them for some days, cheerios others, etc for grains at bfast.

I have never fed my kids jarred baby food but I do not really do any purees since about 9 months unless there is other stuff mixed in (eg sweet potatoes with some ground turkey & carrots) or something like applesauce or smashed up banana as part of a meal with other regular table or finger foods. I do lots of things that have to be fed w/ a spoon though, like yogurt, risotto, pasta stars mixed with various things, etc.
