Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone have CIO success after earlier failure?

Okay, no flames please.

LO has never been a sleeper.  At 10 mos. he's still up anywhere from 3 times to hourly and it's not fun.  We co-sleep so I can resettle him quickly but DH thrashes in his sleep and it's really not a safe situation.  LO has already been elbowed once.

We tried CIO at about 7 months and it totally did not work.  BUT, he was very reflux ridden back then, which has gotten tons better.  Also but, LO is VERY strong willed.  I don't want to try again if it's just not going to work for him.

Did anyone have success with it after previously trying with no success?

  • Have you read Ferber's book? I think CIO works miracles but you really have to be consistent and tough it out a bit. The book is good because it addresses certain scenarios, including co-sleeping, and gives some techniques.

We use it, fall off the wagon, go back, cheat ... but in general, it does work. He just started STTN at 9 months. He backslid a little this week but I am hoping we'll be OK. The not sleeping is miserable.

  • We started at 5.5 months (no flames please). LO got RSV a few days into it so of course we stopped, then we went on vacation, then had company in town...so like a month to 1.5 months later we started again. It took 3 or 4 days, and he's slept through the night ever since. I'd say our LO is strong-willed--he screamed and let us know he was very pissed off. But he wasn't sitting or standing in his crib yet, and i know that makes a difference. Now he doesn't cry at all for naps or at night, and usually falls asleep w/in 15 min. of being laid down. I read Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child and adapted that for our family. Hth!
