Parenting after 35

My company is moving

There were rumors that my company was moving and our CEO confirmed that we are going to move either 20 to 40 minutes away from where we are located now.

I am very lucky that I have a 15 minute commute and can leave my door at 8:15 and be at my office by 8:30 even with traffic.  I am also lucky that I can easily go home to see Matt or grab him for a lunchtime Gymboree class.

Come December I will have more than doubled my commute. Crying

DH stays with Matt until the nanny comes at 8:30 and then I get home by 6 to relieve the nanny.  If we move I would have to leave work almost 40 minutes earlier to get home in time.  I thought about asking if I can work from home one day a week. Part time isn't an option right now.  Any suggestions on making this work?

Oh and for you East/West Coast ladies with horrible commutes I did put in my time. I used to have an 1 1/2hr commute each way when I worked in Boston. So I am definitely enjoying this commute now.

Re: My company is moving

  • Oh no. Sorry.

I can't imagine driving an hour or more to work each day. I have almost no commute. I can ride my bike and get there as fast as driving (when there is traffic). I am about ten blocks from my work.

Working from home one day a week sounds awesome though. Hope they go for it.

  • Aww sweetie, that sucks! I know how you feel though. I have always had really, really long commutes and I got lucky a couple years ago and now only have a 10 min commute. Yesterday I found out my agency will be moving. Not sure where yet but it is still going to suck!

  • Can you change your hours a bit or work thru lunch?

I work 20 miles from home but in the AM that's about 30-45 minute commute and the afternoon commute is generally doube! So once I had baby, I changed my hours to 7-315 which makes both commutes easier and I get to spend more time with Sabrina before she has to go to bed.

This is a good suggestion.  Is flex time an option? If so, perhaps it will help with the commute and Matty's schedule with your nanny.

  • I like the flex time suggestion.

Man, I don't know!  That really stinks!

    Thanks for the sympathy!

The CEO said that managers will work with individuals impacted by the move so I am hoping to get some ideas to present to my manager. One poor guy already has an hour commute and he said he is at his breaking point.  The biggest issue is that my job really depends on face-to-face meetings and conversations but they are very flexible with the developers coming in at all hours so maybe they can be flexible with me.

  • What about something like 4 ten hour days- may not be as good as working from home, but if you and DH could work something out, it could at least give you an extra free day a week.  The tens would probably suck, but...

    No

  • Working from home 1 day would be a huge relief.

With my last job by commute was 45 min. each way and I was spending $300 on gas and $100 on tolls each month!!! So glad I'm not doing that anymore.

Me: 44 DH: 42. DS born healthy at 40 weeks 8/24/09. TTC since then with no luck or ART. Surprise BFP 8/6/14... MMC @ 8 weeks 4 days... Miss you everyday sweet baby angel.
  • That stinks; I'm so sorry! Would you be able to go in a little earlier to compensate for leaving earlier? And it can't hurt to ask if you can work from home--I would definitely do that.

1.5 hour commute? Eek! You definitely did put in your time!! I think the reason that we're putting up with a 1BR apartment is that we can commute into NYC so easily--less than a half hour door to door from where we live. Can't imagine dealing with North Jersey traffic on a daily basis!

  • Definitely try to flex your hours... and try for one day a week from home.  I'm lucky to work from home one day/week.  If meetings and such come up for that day, I try to swap my work from home day to a different day that week.  I used to work 8 to 5, but when I returned to work after DD my manager agreed to let me work 7:30 to 4:30.  I'm home earlier to see DD and relieve our nanny.  Plus the traffic is much lighter at these times so it makes the commute quicker!
