NOT a fan of the temper tantrums

Earlier today, at my office (which is 90% babyproofed... I can't do any better than I have), Aaron crawled over to my bookshelf and took out a book.  I wasn't too worried about him ripping it?if he did, he did. But when he started sucking on the cover and chewing, I took it away.

He then threw a FIT! Screaming and crying. Even though I tried the distraction / redirection route, my boy knew what he wanted.

Yesterday he had a meltdown when my DH wouldn't let him have his cell phone.  I said that I thought tantrums didn't start until later and what a rude awakening this is.

Mikey does that too. I hated when my smiley, good-natured, only-has-a-problem-with-strangers boy first started pitching fits when he didn't get his way.

  • Sorry sweetie...I am dreading this. Its funny I actually just got an email from Beech nut that talks about this and saying no. H has already started. Not as bad but I see it escalating.
  • Ooooh nooo!  I am so afraid of that starting!

  • Tantrums started early for LO too. Although lately he's been good. My trick (as long as it works) is to offer him a toy or other interesting new object during changing time (b/c he hates having his diaper changed) and also when he's about to grab something forbidden. I find distracting him works great, at least so far. I'm sure it won't work when he's older but for now I'm happy! Did you try that? For ex, if he wants your DH's cell phone, don't offer him an old toy instead, offer him something "new" like a closed tube of hand cream or something else that's safe. My LO is fascinated with crap like that, even more than with his toys!
Me: 44 DH: 42. DS born healthy at 40 weeks 8/24/09. TTC since then with no luck or ART. Surprise BFP 8/6/14... MMC @ 8 weeks 4 days... Miss you everyday sweet baby angel.
  • I'm glad that Aaron is not the only baby who hates having his diaper changed.  It's a battle every time?even with interesting toys/objects.

The main issue right now is that he refuses to be distracted. His recall is too sharp!

  • Ooh.. sorry Robin. Sounds like he knows what he wants and won't be tricked. Just remember that you are smarter than him! You'll find that one thing that works and gets his mind off the other thing.

I am not looking forward to tantrums either. We saw Sydney's temper when we went to the cardiologist. After three hours of testing and being such an angel, she finally had a total meltdown. Complete with holding her breath before she screamed. Eyes wide open, face red... oh man, it was terrible to watch.

All I could do was imagine her doing that in the middle of Macy's. Please Lord, give me strength...

Matt will fling himself to the floor if he does not get what he wants.  He used to arch his back and fall backwards but it hurt so he has learned to go forwards.

  • M's haven't been very intense, she usually just squeals her displeasure at us and moves on.... but I know it is just lurking around the corner! The thing that is most likely to trigger a scream is the beloved remote. We watch that thing like it is the "Nuclear Football".

  • We are dealing with this, too. I just ordered "Happiest Toddler on the Block". I heard it has a section on tantrums that's good. Jace gets pissed *several* times a day. He screeches, arches, etc. It's not fun at all :(

I would have a tantrum too after three hours of being poked and prodded.
