Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Changing formula at 9 1/2 months?

S had reflux so the Pedi put her on Similac Sensitive RS. Do they outgrow this? She no longer spits up or anything, but I don't know when or if I should stop with this formula. Do I just ride it out til we switch to cow's milk? DH seems to think she has outgrown this, but I just don't know. ETA: She was diagnosed at 2 months.

Re: Changing formula at 9 1/2 months?

  • Mia's been on Similac Sensitive RS as well since she was born.  She had major reflux issues.  She hasn't been spitting up at all for a few months now.

I was out and about the other day and only had a packet of Similac Advance, and she was hungry.  I gave it to her (4 oz) and no problems.  It's thinner, so DD had to adjust to a little faster flow, but after a second she was fine.  We have several weeks worth of the RS left, but after that's out, I might consider switching to a thinner formula.  You can try it...can't hurt to try.

When/if I do switch, it will be gradual (maybe one bottle a day for a week, then two for a week, etc).

  • Maybe you could get one small can of another kind of formula and see how she does with it. If she does good, then buy more. If she doesn't, then you know.
  • My LO was on Similac Sensitive starting at 2 months when I stopped BF and seemed to have reflux/sensitivity.  At around 6 months I switched to regular because I thought she had outgrown this.  The first week was a little "different" but after a week she got used to the new formula and has been doing great ever since.

Well, that's kind of what prompted me to think about it, MIL bought us formula (without asking) that was just Sensitive Advance. So I've had that in the pantry for a while, so instead of letting it go to waste, I'll just try that. Thanks so much ladies! ETA: Similac Advance

Be sure to give it at least 4-5 days.  After day 1 of the switch I was very close to switching back, but I was told to stick with it, and I did, and it just took her tummy a few days to get used to the new kind.  You will know if she has a serious issue if she gets diarrhea, rash, etc.

I did the switch at 10 1/2 mths from Nutramigen to Gentelease.  It took about 2 weeks as I gradually weaned her from the nutramigen.  Started with 1oz of gentelease, then worked my way to 2, then 3, and so on.  And she has been fine.  I wish I had done it sooner, I would have saved so much money.
