Magee or UPMC Mercy?

My doctor is switching hospitals and I was wondering what Mercy was like compared to Magee?

Re: Magee or UPMC Mercy?

  • They are really not a whole lot different.  Mercy is much less busy.  There are lots of great nurses at both places too.

A couple of differences that may or may not influence your decision.  Magee has waterproof telemetry monitoring meaning that you can be constantly monitored but have mobility and even the opportunity to use the shower or the tub while laboring (if your doctor ok's it).  Mercy has telemetry but it isn't waterproof and they have no tubs.

Magee has a lower c-section rate also but sometimes if it's a busy day there it can seem crazy.

I think there are great classes offered at either hospital and you can go to your classes at either hospital really or you can take independent classes somewhere if you need more flexibility.

  • I can't tell you much about either of them as I delivered my DD at Butler Hospital and will deliver this next baby there as well.  One thing I like about Butler is that it is not very busy, I was the only woman to deliver on the day I had DD, my nurse was so nice she stayed with me the whole time, she never had to leave!  She sat down and talked with me and my mom while I was in labor, she was wonderful it was so nice!  I bet Mercy is more busy than Butler but there are definitely perks to smaller less busy hospitals.
  • Can't comment on Magee or Mercy for delivery, but was very excited to hear good reviews about Butler.  We are TTC and will be moving by Morraine in the coming months, and was concerned about the hospitals for delivery.

  • I delivered at Mercy and had a wonderful experience.  All the nurses were great (I absolutely LOVED my delivery nurse).  If you have any specific questions or concerns I can try to answer them.

  • I delivered at Mercy and they were wonderful.  The doctors and nurses were all great.  Two months before my delivery, I was admitted for over a week.  They were just as wonderful then as they were for my delivery.  I have only positive things to say about it.  I have been to Magee for things other than pregnancy and I wasn't exactly thrilled with some of the nurses...that doesn't mean that everyone's experience there has been bad.
