NBR: Running question...swollen feet?

Can any of you fabulous ladies confirm (or scare me silly by denying) that it's normal for me to have somewhat swollen feet and ankles a few weeks into a running/half-marathon training regime?

I've started out really slowly...only 13 miles over the last three weeks, a few one's, several 2's and a 3 last Sunday.  Always with a day or two break between runs.  Ran 2 miles this morning, worked all day (took a 20 minute walk around 10am), and sat down around 7 this evening and noticed my swollen feet.  Not super bad swollen...just a little bit.  My legs, shins, ankles, and feet are sore...but I can't distinguish if it's pain b/c I'm working hard or pain b/c there's a problem.  I'm definitely sore, but I've definitely increased my activity level in the last month, you know?

Drinking lots of water and kept them up all night.  Planning to swim tomorrow and run again (a 3) on Thursday.  I guess I'd just love it if one person could tell me it's probably totally normal, or that they experienced this and went on to be highly successful running divas.  ;)

Thanks in advance :)

  • Come to think of it...I don't think I drank nearly enough water today.  I was super busy and didn't refill my Klean Kanteen at all after about 1pm.  That's probably it...right?

  • I always get swollen feet this time of year - I think it is adjusting to the heat.  If you didn't have enough water yesterday, that is probably a huge contributor as well.  If they aren't super swollen or really painful I wouldn't worry about it, just be sure to push the water.  And if you are running in the heat, or as you increase distance, be sure to start replacing what you are losing with electrolyte fluids (Gatorade, Cytomax, etc.).

Good job with the training - you are well on your way to rocking the half!
