Microcephaly?

My DS is in the NICU still and today the neurologist said he has microcephaly.  HIs length is 95% but his head circ is only 10%.  His CT and MRI were all normal of his brain.

Anyone else's DC have this?  We plan on asking more today, we just didn't really understand yesterday.

Re: Microcephaly?

  • DD does not have microcephaly, but I am aware of a website that might be useful.  https://www.childrenwithmicro.org/

I am sure your neuro will recommend genetic testing since often times microcephaly is associated with chromosomal issues.  Here's hoping that your kid just has a "small head" and nothing more, but if he does, we are all here for support!

  • My daughter has pretty severe micro (as far as the size of her head).  Hers is not genetic.  It was caused by a stroke.  Her head size is growing along the normal curve, just way below it.

Google is not your friend.  Stay away for now until you are a better place emotionally.  Alot (most) of the info on the internet is old information.

The pp is right, since you have no known cause they will probably run more tests.

Just try to enjoy your baby and being a new mommy.

  • My daughter has microcephaly.  Typically microcephaly is when head circumference is 3 standard deviations below the charts - which means 10% is well above the level for micro.   My daughter's head is about 2 standard deviations below - we don't have a cause.  It's likely to be genetic as she also has some heart problems, very tiny hands and feet, some facial features that also indicate and global developmental delays.  My daughter's MRI had several findings for areas of the brain that were specifically small.  Definitely don't google - it will make you think your child has fetal alcohol syndrome :)  I wouldn't get too worked up yet - if his head circ. is on the charts and the MRI and CT were normal, that is a great sign!

  • I agree with the PP advice re: not googling. My doctors said microcephaly just means small head-- nothing more, nothing less. Sometimes it can mean there are problems that caused or relate to the small head, but often times not. Plus, I don't think a circumference in the 10th percentile is actually microcephaly.
  • My son was in the 95 percentile for length and weight and only te 5th percentile for head circumference.  No one is ever concerned about his head size but me.  He is on the autism spectrum, but very mild and his dev. pedi has hopes to be able to remove that dx someday!  We are going to see a genetisist but the dev pedi really doesn't think his small head, microcephaly, is anything to worry about.  Nor is there anything you can do about head size.
