Rec your PNV or other pre-pg care/prep

I was at the Tarjey today and was looking at the pre-natal vitamins, and that got me to wondering about other things I need to be doing in preparation for TTC. Whatcha got for me, ladies?

  • I took the generic Target brand PNV.

  • I take Target PNVs as well.  I don't know if my doctor will change that once I see her, but, I've been taking them for years.

I take extra folic acid as well.  That's just a thing with me and working with the March of Dimes.  I take the Target PNV and an extra 400 mg (mcg?  whatever) of Folic Acid.

  • Start making a little bit of low impact exercise a part of your daily routine if you don't exercise already!  Keep the O2 flowin'!

ETA:  I took a generic PNV before I got preggy for a long time, but when I was pregnant, I coudln't hold it down anymore (along with a bunch of other ones) so I opted to just take folic acid and calcium.  The calcium also made me sick, so I just stuck to the folic acid.

  • I do the target prenatal (the one that's the generic of the One-a-Day brand) and a 400 mcg tablet of folic acid.  A bit overkill on the folic acid but still within reasonable range (total 1200 mcg, which is micrograms BTW).  You mainly want to make sure you're taking at least 400 mcg of folic acid, preferably 800 mcg unless there's a special situation

My OB/GYN doc checked my thyroid and cholesterol.  See if you can get your BMI under 30 if it's not to reduce your risk of other complications.  Make sure you've had a MMR & TDaP vaccine within a reasonable time frame.  If you need a new teatnus shot make sure it has the pertussis vaccine in it also (which is the TDaP version).  You can't get MMR or TDaP while pregnant and if you get measles or pertussis while pregnant it can lead to birth defects (please correct me if I'm wrong on this one).  Flu shots are also a good idea and last I heard the new combined flu shot will contain the H1N1 strain in it, so no separate shot needed like last year.  That won't be available until fall though.

Also if you're taking any supplements or meds, make sure that what you're taking is compatible with pregnancy.  A lot of meds are but some you may need to switch to a different version because it's a bit safer or more studied in pregnancy.  HTH

  • And congrats on TTC, Laura!!!!  I was going to reply down below, but I figured this was easier!!!

  • I take Rainbow Light Just Once Prenatal vitamins, they are completely plant based. I also take Nordic Naturals DHA supplements. I didn't start the DHA until 3rd trimester though bc they made me throw up. I've been fine with these though and I figure, there's the most brain development right now so it's still helping.

  • I got mine at GNC
  • I also take the Target PNVs.  For a while during first tri they made me sick, so my dr gave me samples of a RX pnv that I really liked, but when they ran out I was able to stomach the Target brand again so I went back to them instead of paying for prescription.  The RX was called PreNexa or something like that.
  • You already chart, don't you?  Not that you HAVE to, but, I liked knowing all of that stuff.

yep. And I'm going back and reading the TCOYF part that's about GETTING PG instead of avoiding it Smile

  • I also take Target PNV...  I have to take them at bedtime because they make me so sick.
  • I took a generic but also just wanted to say congrats!  Sending lots of baby dust your way.
  • I take a Nature Made prenatal that includes DHA in a single pill.
  • I take the GNC PNVs and haven't had a problem with them.  I always buy them in the beginning of the month with my Gold Card so I think they come out to about $12 every 2 months.

My only rec would be charting (which it looks like you're doing) and I also read What To Expect Before You're Expecting and TCOYF.  Also, hanging around here helps!

  • I've been taking One-a-Day's Prenatal Vitamins for 4 months now...they come in a 2 pill form. One's a PNV and the other is a DHA pill (good for spinal & brain development) they're like $15 a month for a 30 day supply and the past 4 boxes I've bought all come with a $5 off coupon inside! I take them with dinner at night so that way they don't upset my stomach..and I don't have any issues. Plus, my mom said to take them with food so that way you also get more vitamins absorbed into your system - whether that's true or not...who knows!

I've also tried to better my eatting habits (which is very difficult for a picky eatter like me). I already don't drink caffeine or alcohol, so that wasn't a problem. I started trying to drink more than enough H2O throughout the day to keep myself well hydrated also. We just started TTC so I've been trying to avoid pretty much anything I couldn't eat/drink/take while I'm PG, just in case it happens & I don't notice right away!!!

I've been reading What to Expect When You're Expecting also...there's a lot of great tips in there! Hanging around here always has good tips too!

One thing I've been doing (which I"m sure everyone else does too) is trying to save a boat load! I don't have maternity coverage on my health insurance so I have to pay for the delivery out of pocket...so I'm trying to live off of my "cut-back" salary (basically what i'll be living off of when i go part time after having a baby) and just save the excess. That way I save a lot, and am used to a lower salary bracket at the same time....if that makes sense!

HTH! GL with TTC and plenty of *baby dust* heading your way!!!!
