3rd Trimester

39 Weeks and still floating.

Hey, so I'm almost 39 weeks and LO is still not engaged in my pelvis. My OB says this is rather uncommon for first pregnancies. She also mentioned that it's possible LO may not drop at all (never knew this could happen) in which case I'd need to have a scheduled c-section. Anyone else ever have this happen? Did LO finally drop? If so, were you able to go into labor naturally?

  • At my last appt my LO wasnt engaged either.  However my OB didnt seem to concerned and said that a lot of the times it happens during active labour?  But obviously thats different from what your OB said so Im curious to know what the answers are

  • From what I've heard, it actually is quite common in 1st pregnancies.

My LO was as high as high can get when I was induced at 39wks for pre-e.

I ended up having a c/s after 3 hours of pushing because she wouldn't move down into the birth canal. Turns out she wouldn't move down because the cord was wrapped around her neck. So we're an oddball. =]

I had a friend whose baby was in her ribs at 41 weeks, set an iduction date for 42 weeks, and went into labor the next day. She had her LO in 8 hours. So it's possible.  Good Luck!

  • It is possible that LO won't ever drop, but it is also possible that LO will drop when you are in active labor. When I went to the hospital for DS, they couldn't feel his head and I was 5-6 cm dilated. I had to push here and there around 6-7 cm and then again at 8 cm to get him to come down. It wasn't until the very end that he dropped, and that was with a lot of help from me. With DD, she didn't drop until active labor, but then again I was induced. But I was already 38 weeks.

  • I did not know this was a concern ... now I'm a a little worried. My LO has been head down for a couple months now, but I can tell she's not "locked in". I have another appointment Thursday, but I still feel her move her head into my hip from time to time, so I don't think anything's changed.
  • My first didn't drop until i was in labor and everything went fine.  My second one also didn't drop and he was still breech at the 40 wk appt. but somehow "flipped" so when I went into labor I was able to avoid a c-section (he was "sunny-side up though).  So don't panic yet.  I may have just been lucky but even if that is the case it means you could be lucky too.  GL!
  • Your LO can still engage. You shouldn't schedule a c-section. I'm sure you'll go into labor when the time is right.

  • I'm in the boat there with you! She has still been high and no dilation or anything. My doctor had me have a quick ultrasound last week to make sure she was still head down cause she couldn't tell. she is still head down. My doctor told me to get on all 4's for 20 min's a day. so I have been doing that 2 times a day. cause she told me that if i had no change she wouldn't induce me till i was 41 weeks but if I have some dilation she would induce me at 40 weeks. so I'm looking forward to my appt wednesday to find out if something is going on. fingers crossed for us!
