Two Under 2

Guest room situation

So DH and I had hoped to have our basement finished, where we plan to add a guest room and full bath, before we had our second. Well that didn't happen and we undexpectedly got PG with the 2nd...I really don't want the LO's to share a room because I don't want them to wake each other up. However, we have no guest room area so when my parents visit I will have nowhere to put them since all 3 bedrooms will be used. I don't want to put my 50-something year-old dad who had to have a knee replacement on an air mattress. They visit about once every 2 months. DH thinks he could finish the bedroom in the basement himself but I really don't want to go into debt over this; I want to do it when we can really afford it.

  Any suggestions??

Re: Guest room situation

  • We were in a similar situation....

We actually moved the guest bed-set downstairs into the unfinished basement and that is where the in-laws have stayed when they visit. I know it's not great, but oh well. Our LO's are not going to share a room and I am very anal about their sleeping because they are both light sleepers.

Right now we are finishing our bonus room and will be buying a new pull-out couch for it within the next few months and that is going to be the new *guest* room at least to get people out of the basement.

It will also be #3's room (in the corner) until he/she is old enough to share a room with a sibling and/or DH finishes the basement with another bedroom.

  • We have a 3bd house and the guest room is part of DS2's room. The guest room part really consists of a bed.  The rest of the stuff in that room is a crib, a dresser (from my old bedroom set) that is used for DS2's stuff, and a couple of makeshift night stands.  When people come to visit, I move the changing pad (sits on top of dresser), wipes, diapers, and the baby into my room.  He sleeps in a PNP there.  Works for us and it will be like that, as far as I know, until we don't live there anymore (we rent and no plans on moving at this point).  If someone was staying for awhile, I would hang up a lot of DS2's clothes and put them in the closet so they could have drawer space if they wanted it (or they can just hang up their stuff in the closet).

  • FWIW - My Mom (who's had both knees done) thinks our full height queen sized aero bed is more comfortable than the old queen sized bed we got rid of when we made nursery #2.

They make them full height now so people don't have to get down on the floor to get into them.

I also really liked having the aero bed in the baby's room for the first month or so so that I could sleep close by, have him in his own crib, and let DH get some much needed sleep on work nights by not having to hear the monitor all night long.

We bunk the kids in together when family comes to visit and blow up the aero bed in the larger of the 2 kids rooms.

    Works well for us!

    GL with your decisions.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • get a lazy-boy hideabed couch.  that's what we ended up doing - with the house shrinking we needed furniture to do double duty.  You gotta make your house work for your family, so you definitely don't need a whole room for guests now, just a comfy bed. My in-laws (FIL had total knee replacement surgery a little over a year ago) thought it was really comfy.  It's the partial blow up/partial mattress kind.
