As in, "I won't name my kid Joseph because I don't like Joe as a nickname, but Joey is ok" or "My kid has so many silly nicknames that I'm not sure he knows what his real name is anymore"?
Here is my "thing" about NNs- I named DD after my grandmother who was dying while I was pregnant (Marian.) I LOVE her name. My NN for her has always been Mare.
I did not want people calling her Mary. Now that she is in Jr High, what does everyone call her? Mary. I understand that she doesn't have the same hangups I had from always being firstnamelastinitial in school, but I will never call her by that NN. To me, it's not a NN, it's a different name all together. (at least she spells it Mari.)
I'm all for nicknames, but I think it's funny to start with a nickname and work backwards to find a first name.
Ha, that's exactly what we did!
We wanted DS to have the initials T.S. so that T.S. could be his nickname. Then we found names that we liked together that started with T & S. (TS is significant for many reasons.) Then we didn't love any T names so we ended up with a T nickname as well (Theo). It's a strange way to get a name, but it worked for us.

the nickname for my baby is Toto, not crazy about it but whatever. ill try to get hiim called the more popular.
Baby's name is Salvatore. Toto is the Italian nickname for it, Sal is the more Americanized nickname. My FIL and my dad are both Salvatore. FIL is Toto, my dad Sal. I will do my best to have people call him Sal and not Toto!

Re: GAWD it drives me crazy
you mean like people who don't like the nicknames that people *may* develop for their child? Like, for instance Samuel-->Sam or Sammy?

Because I fall into the 2nd category.

yea that's just dumb. IMO, nicknames are something that just happen. You can't really declare a nickname.
Elivia?
Also Evy annoys me for some reason. The v-y combination looks weird.

Obsessing over almost anything drives me crazy.
