Caladryl or cortisone for itchy rash???

Last week I noticed that Alexis had a rash on her legs.  It was patchy and looked almost like sores so I took her to the pedi who said it was common, and nothing causes it and there's really nothing that can be done for it, they also said that it shouldn't bother her.

I had noticed that she was being a little difficult about going to sleep but chalked it up to stubbornness.  Well, last night was horrible.  Yesterday I noticed the rash was worse, now it was more like little red spots, mainly on her ankles and lower legs.  She would not go to sleep at all.  Marc ended up driving with her and she finally fell asleep at 10:30, but it didn't last long.  At 2:30 she woke up screaming and would not calm down.  We brought her into bed with us.  She slept but was so restless - she was moving her legs all night and kicking and moving.  At 7am she was up and whining and that's when I noticed she was scratching, she had drawn blood from all the scratching.  I put some cortisone on it that I had at home and went to target and got caladryl also.  Do you think I can put them both on or just one?  If it's one which one is better?   I also got the generic benadryl.  

I think it's time I take her to a dermatologist, she has way too many skin issues.

Poor Alexis! I would definitely take her to a derm. They may be able to prescribe something stronger. I've had several students with dermatitis or eczema and it started very early for them so it's best to rule that out or get treatment for it right away.

Poor Alexis! She sounds miserable. I don't have any advice to add, but I hope she gets some relief soon.

I would call the pedi for advice for now, but def make her an appt with a Pediatric Derm. there aren't many around, so you might have to wait a few weeks for an appt.

Poor Alexis. I know how uncomfortable an itchy rash can be. A few things that have helped in the past are..Aveeno Soothing Bath Treament, Aveeno Overnight Itch Relief Cream and Cortizone Maximum Strength. I don't think there should be a problem with a child using them but you might want to check with a pharmacist.

But at the end of the day the only thing that really helps is doctor prescribed medication. I would definetly make an appt with a pediatric derm.

Cortaid has worked wonders for us.  It's the only thing that got rid of the itchy rash L would get on her face.  Goodl uck!

Oh no.. Im sorry.  My DS has eczema and he gets patches all over his legs.  I keep it mosturized with aquaphor when they are not bad, but when he itches himself to the point that it bleeds.  I have a oil I think its called dermasmooth.  Its a pescription and it does have a small amount of steroid in it but its the only thing that makes it go away and gives him relief.  This one is the safest, you can use it on babies that are 6 months and older. (never on the face though)

I would take her to a derm if it is not getting better and bothering her that much.

I'm a pediatric derm PA at miami children's hospital. Try cortisone 2x day for about 2 weeks. You can also give her Zyrtec (OTC) for the itch. If it worsens, see your pedi or come in for a visit!
