Off center umbilical cord?

During my 20wk u/s the tech didn't mention it, the radiologist didn't mention it but when i got in with my OB she mentioned it. She said it was no big deal. I asked her if it could cause issues later and she said no. I'm assuming it's just off center and not on the edge of the placenta.

I just googled it and now i'm scared that it could cause issues. Both babies are 13oz right now but i read it could cause problems with them growing and still births!

I saw a peri once and wasn't going to go back but now i'm worried i should even though my OB was really not concerned about it.

Anyone else had this diagnosed?

Thanks!

Re: Off center umbilical cord?

  • Yes. Sophia had this, and it's called a marginal cord insertion.  Step away from Dr. Google.  I freaked as well, but my peri told me that she would be just fine.  And she was.

It *can* lead to growth restriction, but Sophia was my bigger baby at 6 lbs 3 oz at 36w2d.  No problems at all.  :)

They had me come in for growth scans to monitor it, but it was never an issue.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • My daughter had this as well.  She did develop IUGR, but she's doing fine now, just a little smaller than her sister.  I was put on a high protein diet by my MFM- drinking lots of ensure or boost, and trying to take in as much protein as possible to keep her growing.  Your doctor should keep an eye on her growth and let you know what to do.  If it were me, I would definitely see your peri regularly.  They are just better equipped to find problems early on than a regular OB.

  • one of my daughters had a marginal cord as well.  both babies grew healthy and strong and continue to do so!  STOP the googling and listen to your OB.  I'm sure everything will be fine:)

Ditto this. I had weekly u/s at the peri's office to check her growth and blood flow through the umbilical cord. I ended up being induced at 34w5d due to pre-e and baby A was 5lbs 5oz, while baby B was 3lbs 12oz. That was the only difference though - they both came home from the hospital the same day and have met all milestones on time and within days of each other.

Step away from google - I've met A LOT of twin moms who have had marginal and velamentous cord insertions with great outcomes. If they are measuring on track now, you are doing great. My baby B was already a full week behind in the 1st trimester!!
