Digital Photo Files- help!

I used to just upload my photos and sort them into folders that I made myself.  Sometimes they were just one event, like "Christmas 2009", or other times more general like "Spring 2010".  My computer guy was here a few weeks ago and set up the computer to automatically upload photos when the camera is connected, and to sort them into folders by date taken.  This was fine until I realized I suddenly had a MILLION folders and I can't find anything now!  Some folders only have like 2-3 photos in them (since they are based on date taken) and this is officially driving me crazy.

I'm thinking of going back to my old ways but I want to hear your ideas before I start this process because I'm sure I will have to dedicate an entire afternoon to organizing!  UGH!  (I thought this digital stuff was supposed to make life easier!??!!)

How do you sort and organize your digital files?

  • I used to sort them by date but the same thing happened to me - I couldn't find anything! Now I pretty much do what you used to do "Christmas 2009", "Soph 9 Months", "Zoo Spring 2010", etc.

    Not perfect, but much easier!

  • I do it your original way.  I can never remember what date it was when I took a picture or when we did something.  I want them labeled something easy - Like "Xmas 2009" not 12/25/2009.  Too confusing.  And when I want to find something, I remember the event, not the date.

I am in desperate need of reorganizing mine, but this is how I do it too. Trouble is after Alexa was born everything went into the "Alexa" file and now there are probably 2,000 photos in there...ekkk. I think I am going to reorganize by year and then do subfolders - Summer '10, Zoo '10, Christmas '10, etc.

  • I just had this issue come up, after realizing I have hundreds of pics that I need to get organized!  I decided to do them by season/year then do subcategories after that.  So, right now, I have a Spring 2010 folder, with a "Trip to the Zoo" subfolder.  I figured sorting by season instead of just year might be a bit more manageable.
  • EmaiL , FB, or PM me ladies, I have a suggestion, but I can't post it because I work for the Company as a side job.

  • I organize mine your original way. I have one big folder labeled Baby B, then there are several subfolders: first hair cut, food time eating solids, first bath, etc.

  • I have a folder for each year, then subfolders that each contain 3 months (Jan, feb, march). Then if there were big events in one of those months it might get it's own subfolder.
