So DH and I are in the process of TTC. I'm on temporary insurance this month and am looking for something permanent before I get pg. (I'm a sub and we get NO benefits). Unfortunately, from the research I've done so far it looks like most insurance plans require that you be on theirs for 18+ months before they will cover maternity/prenatal, etc. Does anyone know of an insuance plan that I can get on that will cover me if I get pg soon?
Re: Insurance question
I haven't heard of the 18 month rule before? I only had United Healthcare for 4 months before I got pregnant and they covered me for 3 months before we switched to DH's insurance (BCBS) because he had better hospital coverage. BCBS covered my pregnancy even though I signed up with them midway into my pregnancy.

I was very traumatized by my second pregnancy because we got pregnant and the next morning learned dh's upcoming grad school didn't have family coverage, and even worse, I was uninsurable, dh was uninsurable (with a pg wife), and my SON was uninsurable (a pg mom.) Simply horrific....words can't even describe the hell I went through emotionally.
We ended up keeping me on DH's Cobra through work and he got on a plan for ininsurables - you should definitely look into it. It's called MCHA and it's a high-risk pool for Minnesotan's. Dh and my son got it on and we're so, so grateful. I could have also got on it because i was uninsurable. It is NOT cheap - 102-106% ABOVE private rates....and you have to figure out deductibles, etc. But it IS insurance.
Give my agent a call. She sells blue cross plans and told me about MCHA. I didn't know her before and she became my angel. Be forewarned she is a CHATTY, CHATTY woman so don't call her until you have an hour or more... ;-) She can set you up with MCHA and is a total wizard with all insurance stuff.

Once the health reform goes into effect (1/1/2011), plans cannot exclude preexisting condition (they consider pregnancy a condition). Furthermore maternity benefits will be provided in the individual insurance market.
