Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

My neighbor got a pit bull.

I will preface this by saying that I am a huge dog lover. I have a very large dog myself and I dont believe that pit bulls are inherently bad but that their owners have control over making them that way.

I was coming back from a walk with Lilly and our dog when my neighbor came out of his house (we live in a townhouse) with his dog. His dog lunged towards London (my dog) and was barking like crazy. He was on a leash but it was scary! I know it sounds stupid but he had the most crazy, vicious bark I have ever heard. My dog is the biggest baby so thank goodness she was completely exhausted from our walk b/c otherwise she would have dragged me down the street trying to get away. She is 120 lbs, so she has the ability to do so. The owner just said "I got him." I feel really nervous about having this dog living next door to us:(

    Ugh. I understand, completely.

My sister has a 6 mo old pitbull, and got her when she was just a tiny puppy. She was a great, happy dog until recently. My sister took her to my mom's house to visit, and the dog came within inches of Quentin's face and snapped! The dog was angry because Q was holding a piece of toast, and the dog wanted it. I snatched Q up as fast as I could, and my mom demanded my sister take the dog outside. When my sister reached for her dogs collar, the dog bit her hand. : (
Made me VERY nervous, and I told her to please not bring her dog around Quentin again.

She wants to get rid of the dog, but her BF is refusing. He wants to take the dog to training first to see if anything can change.
It scares me that she has that dog around because my sister is 10 weeks pregnant, and often alone with the dog.

  • Yikes. I feel the same way about dogs, but I would be a little cautious too. One of our neighbors had a pit bull and they use to walk him through our yard every day. Something happened one day and I saw a couple cop cars on the corner and heard some shots and we saw the pit bull. We don't know if he attacked someone or what.

That said, my SIL has a pit bull and I absolutely adore her. She's a wonderful dog. So I do agree it's typically the owners that make them aggressive, that can pretty much be said of any breed.

  • I feel you!  Thank goodness this neighbors moved...but a few months ago we had neighbors with about 4 pit bulls!!!  They had bitten a women who was walking down the road, killed another dog in their front yard, and had several other incidents.  *the owners trained them to fight and would take them to fights and such*  Well we started a petition to actually try to get rid of them because we and the other neighbors were sick of it!  There are several kids on this street and the surrounding streets who walk it daily, thankfully the owner of the house kicked them out for all the drug busts they had goin' on over there.
  • I understand that is your neighbor and you have to live next door to him so that makes things difficult.
I'm not sure what the law states where you live but I'm right by Detroit and the law around here is that the dog MUST be registered and tattooed along with all his other paperwork; The dog cannot be violent or agressive or else I believe they can take it away from you.
If you feel concerned you could call your police station (non-911 call obviously) and make a complaint and ask them to come out and check that the owner has all the right documents to have the dog.. Around here a good 50% of people do not have the right paperwork for the dog and have to give them up. Personally I would call anyways just to make sure.
