Normal Rectal Temp?

What is your opinion of a normal rectal temp? Collin felt warm to me today and I just took his temp and it is 100.7 rectally. do I call the Dr or no? He was just hospitalized for 72 hours at 7 weeks old for a fever. The poor baby went thru a bunch of tests....any advice???

TIA

Re: Normal Rectal Temp?

  • I wish I took my daughter's temp more often, however, the few times I have, her rectal temp has been about 99.1 or 99.2.  If her temp was over 100, I probably would call at the very least or give some meds to help with the temp.  Sorry to hear about your LO.  My family has had issues with babies and fevers so I just don't mess around.

  • Our pedi only wants to see natalie if her temp is over 100.4 for the first 2 months.  Other than that, I probably wouldn't call until 102 (although "they" say it's fine to 105...I don't agree and would definitely call much sooner).  Do you have the advice nurse number for Sutter? If not, I'll send it to you.  It might be on their outgoing message on the weekend.
Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

  • I also thought the "magic" number was 100.4 until 3 months old.  I'd probably call just to be on the safe side...

  • Yes it's a fever, rectal is 100.4 or greater as PP said. I would definitely call.
