Baby Names

Why would any parent do this?!

I've come across a few different older men through my work lately who basically have the same first and last name, and I just don't understand it. Did parents used to find it funny? If my last name was a male first name (my maiden name actually was!), I would surely cross off that as a first name option! They have all been much older men, think date of birth circa 1930's.

Some examples:

Rodger Rodgers
Phillip Phillips
William Williams

Re: Why would any parent do this?!

  • I know a little 5 year old with a name similar to this style.  It's not quite as bad as William Williams, but I still wonder why his parents did that!!

  • My step father is Pete Peterson. Not his real name, thankfully. When he joined the army, there were several Petersons, so they started calling him Pete. It stuck, and now the only ones who call him by his real name are his mother and sisters.

  • i graduated high school with Fredrick Fredrickson the Third---so Fred Fredrickson!   :)    i think if it is a family tradition it isn't so bad.   but i would have difficulty if it were my hubby--Robert Robertson!
  • I know it's not quite the same, but I had a teacher in 8th grade named Ronald McDonald. :) I'm pretty sure he was born pre-Mickey D's, but it still makes me laugh.

I also knew a Donald McDonald. (McDonald was a popular name where I grew up)

  • I went to school with a William Williams. His gpa was Bill and dad was Billy. He went by Will. I laughed when I heard his last name in class.
  • I work with an Eric Erickson, and he is only in his mid-30s!

And it is not quite the same because she married into this name, but my friend's mom is Shirley McShurely.

  • I have no idea. I saw an architect on one of those building plaques who's name was Victor V. Victor. I had to laugh...and wonder if his middle name was Victor.

  • I know a little boy named David David.  Actually, David David III. No
  • I went to school with a girl named Ashley Ashley...  her grandpa wanted her to have the family name in case she was ever married, or something like that.
  • I dated a guy with whose last name was the same as my first name. It sure is a good thing that it didn't last lol... I'm pretty sure that would have made me decide to keep my maiden name!

What an odd thing for parents to choose to do!
