Anyone know if Freestyle is a closed system?

A friend of mine just had a baby 2 days ago and I offered for her to borrow my pump.  But now I'm reading a lot of things about open vs. closed system pumps and I'm not sure if the medlea freestyle is a closed pump, or if it is safe to let her borrow it??  She is buying all new parts (shields, tubing, etc.) but now I'm nervous about letting her use it.  I'm not sure what to do!

Re: Anyone know if Freestyle is a closed system?

  • I don't think any non-hospital grade Medela pumps are closed systems

  • So then is it not safe to ever use this pump again with a future baby since there could be milk and bacteria in the motor of the pump?  I'm so confused now!  I thought I could use it again in a few years if we have another baby, and now it seems like if I should not let anyone else use it because of the risk that there is bacteria in there from my own milk....then why would I use it again in a few years if the same risk is there about the bacteria?  Ugh, I spent like $400 on my pump and now I feel like it isn't safe to ever use again!

  • The Freestyle is not a closed system (pp is correct - no Medela is closed except the hospital-grade ones).  You can re-use your own pump because 1) you know whether or not you ever got milk in the tubes and then into the motor, and 2) even if you did get milk in the motor (highly unlikely), it is your own milk and you know your medical history and know about any viruses, etc. that could contaminate the milk.

Medela does not want the liability of the tiny chance that someone will buy a used pump and then claim that their baby got a disease from the pump.  So if you trust that your friend won't get any milk in the tubes and does not have a communicable disease, you can use the pump after she does.  Personally, I would worry more that she will wear out your pump (they generally don't last more than a year or two with hard use) or damage it and then not replace it.

The Lansinoh/Ameda pumps are good and only cost $100-150 for a double electric - you could recommend those to her and say that you read the manual and your pump is single-user.

I think Ameda is the only non hospital grade pump that's a closed system.
