Has your toddler/child ever repeated a bad word after hearing it from other people? If so, how do you deal with it / correct them so they won't keep saying it?
I just tell him not to say it because its a bad word. He knows which ones are bad too. Its never been that big of a deal and we don't make it into one so he doesn't think that its fun.
See... I'm asking because my nephew is talking, and very much a little parrot right now. My FIL/BIL/DH all tend to be heavy on the potty mouth at times. My SIL already told me that my nephew said something bad last week. She was shocked, and she isn't sure how to correct him, and I have tobe honest... if I heard him say a bad word I would probably laugh out of shock, and I don't want to encourage the behavior by laughing.
I just want to make sure if I hear it, I do the right thing.
I t happens- kids hear a lot more than we think. Just remind him it is not a word that is polite to use. If he's in the silly mode and keeps repeating to get a reaction ( I know some kids do this) I'd suggest a time out, to settle and quiet..though, I don't know if it's something you do/are comfortable with since this is your nephew.
My 3 year old was going around calling everything stupid (Thank you Mr. Potato Head from Toy Story). The first time he said it, I told him very calmly that I don't like that word and it isn't nice. But since my son is the "class clown" type, he kept being silly and kept saying it over and over waiting for my reaction. I simply ignored him and he stopped. Now if he hears that word, he says "That word isn't nice. I don't like it!"
Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all."
