Can someone (exp'd mom, nanny, teacher, anyone) help me find a good resource on toddler development? A book, text book, website?
I am looking for when specific cognitive and motor skills are typically developed. Two examples - recognizing colors. I didn't think that happened until around three - but Lil Miss is starting to point out colors. So far green and yellow, and sometimes blue. Twice yesterday she told me that two different shirts were green. I'm really surprised by this.
Next, it is of the upmost importnace that I teach her to say her name when asked. I got a big "F" on my mommy report card this week for this and lets just say I will get no peace until this goal is accomplished. Now, on one hand, Lil Miss has learned a new word in one day. Just last week I purposely taught her the word girl, and she got it. (Recognizes a girl in real life, a drawing, a photograph, says it without prompting and correctly.) So yes, she can learn to say her name. But, I don't think she is going to grasp the concept of 'name.' She doesn't yet recognise herself in a mirror or photo, or at least I don't think so. She always says "baby." But she does recognise me (momma) daddy, grandma, and Penny. So I don't know if this is just around the corner or what?!
But the reason I am looking for a book/ resource/ something with authority is becasue (a) I don't ever want to push her to do something that she isn't ready to do (b) I need back-up when making these claims (c) I'd like to see where she is at compared to where she 'should' be, so I know that I am doing enough. She really is smart and I don't want her to get bored. I know this kinda seems all over the place, but there is back story, and my goal is just to be a good mom with a happy, healthy daughter, and I just need some good back-up.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Re: Lil Miss is too smart for MY own good! need a resource, please
Last semester I had to take an infant development class for a credit and I loved the textbook!
I am not sure how much money you want to spend or how in depth you want to go, but it goes over all motor and mental development from birth to three. It breaks down each month and where they should be physically and developmentally up to 36 months.

Eleise, thanks for that link. I have the AAP's book, which is almost identical to that site.
Rachael, I think that text book is going to be exactly what I need.
I appreciate both of your help ladies!
