Traveling with toddlers - which would you rather do?

We're taking a trip to Alaska either a year from now or two years from now, a summer trip.  We'll fly up, but spend most of the time in an RV driving around.  We'll have my mom with us for most of the trip and spend some time at her house.

When we've been before, most of our activities revolve around being outdoors and hiking.  Both things you can do with littles, but on a smaller scale than what we normally aim for.

The question is, would you rather travel with an almost three year old and almost one year old?  Or would wait another year and take this trip with an almost four year old and almost two year old?

I'm leaning towards going a year from now.  An almost one year will be happier to be carried and won't really care what we do, so we'd really have to just entertain Marion.  But then again, I don't know what it's like to have an older kid, so maybe an almost four year old would be easier on that kind of a trip?

  • i think i'd prefer the almost 4yr and 2yr olds.  because your little one will be at least crawling and if they're like mine, wouldn't want to be carried anymore.  they want to do it themselves.

    just my 2 cents...

  • My almost 2 year old is a holy terror, last year when he was almost 1 and went on a trip it was very nice because he just went with the flow.   We go on vacation next week and I have a feeling it is going to be VERY INTERESTING!

I think either way it is going to be a challenge.  However, the older they are the less "stuff" they need.  You won't have to worry about cribs or diapers (hopefully).  I'm taking L and L to California BY MYSELF for 2.5 weeks in August.  I'll let you know how it goes.
  • If it was DisneyWorld or something, I would say 2 and 4.  But for hiking and nature stuff, I think 1 and 3 would actually be better because the 1 yo would like to be pushed in the stroller and will most likely stay in it versus a 2 year old.
