TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

work

Just wondering what we all do for work? I'm a therapist for kids who have been removed from their parents care due to neglect/abuse (which is sometimes hard after my m/c's...how can they abuse something so precious?)

Sometimes I wonder this sort of thing too, not so much because of the difficulty I feel but because of me being childless some how makes me not as creditable.  I am a school social worker.  A year doesn't go by that a parent of a student asks me if I have kids and when I respond no, they kind of go, humph.  I HATE it!  I also hate it when parents complain about how busy they are or how horrible their kids are.  I have to bite my tongue everytime because I want to say, if they are so bad, I will take them!

After my first loss I found it really hard to go back to work.  I took two weeks off - some due to medical issues and some emotional.  The thing that drove me back was a parent email that one of my students was struggling and needed to see me.  I hadn't seen her all summer and she was struggling in her new grade.  She is so precious and the thought I was needed, forced me back.

I can see why your job would be hard though.  I deal with some abuse situations, but not on a daily basis.

Does anyone else have a job where being childless some how makes you less of a worker?

  • I'm a kindergarten teacher.  At PT conferences, parents often ask me how to discipline their kids at home and stuff.  I actually love saying, "I can't tell you that, I'm not a parent yet, sorry!" Hopefully I won't be able to say it for too much longer, though!  I just don't feel qualified giving out that kind of advice...or sometimes if I said what I was really thinking, the parents might take it the wrong way or something.

  • I'm a CPA.  The only time not having kids bothers me at work is when people assume I have no life and I can take trips at the last minute, or work OT as I need to.  It hasn't had any impact on my credibility with respect to my job, nor should it.

My boss told me just last week, since my DH works just a couple miles from my office, that we should get on the same schedule and car pool since you don't have kids.  What she/they don't understand is that I still have other commitments that are none of their business.  Button pushed!

huh.  I don't know what I thought you did for a living, but your job seems more stressful than I expected for you.  Maybe it is your surfer girl persona.  Is your job really stressful or is it kind of fun?

  • I am a journal assistant for an academic journal at a university. I basically oversee the manuscripts, get them to reviewers, and submit them to the professor for publication consideration.

It's nice, because it's all on-line, so I can work from home most of the time.

  • I'm a Research Assistant for an Agriculture Research firm. Basically we do surveys with farmers and ranchers. I've worked here since high school with a break of 2 yrs or so when DS started school.
  • I am a retail manager and I hate other employees thinking I can work all the holidays because I don't have kids.
