Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

ISR Swim Lessons

Has anyone done this with their child and how much did it cost you, if you dont mind me asking? I really want to sign my son up for this, but it's $700.  I know you cant put a price on your childs life, but I just dont have that kind of money.  Has anyone heard if they offer this somewhere on a volunteer-type schedule? Im in the St. Louis area...

Re: ISR Swim Lessons

  • The Y has infant and toddler swimming classes as well as mommy and me classes, Im in NC, but I'm pretty sure they have them everywhere...

We're actually starting next month for our lessons and it is A LOT cheaper than $700, that kind of seems ridiculous to me, are they private lessons? what's the deal?

The Y classes are 80 dollars for non-members (thats what we're doing)

  • The ISR program is TOTALLY worth it!  It's imperative that your LO know how to react in the water if he were to fall in.  It also teaches them to respect the water.  DS LOVES the water and is just about done with his second part of the ISR lessons.

You could check at your local YMCA to see if they offer a program called SafeStart.  It's the SAME program, just at the Y.  It generally costs less at the Y.

Even if they don't have it, it's worth the money.  The first round of the lessons, we had the ISR instructor come to our house b/c we didn't live near a Y and it was more than what we paid for this other round (that he's in now) at the Y.

    Good luck! :)

The regular lessons aren't survival lessons like the ISR/SafeStart lessons.  They learn how to actually swim, rollover, float, etc to get to the wall if they were to fall in with the ISR/SS.

The ISR lessons are totally different than a typical swim lesson.

  • So they don't teach them those survival tips in the regular swim lessons?  How old do they have to be to dot he ISR?

For the rollback and float - they have to be crawling well.  For the rollback, float, swim sequence, they have to be walking WELL.  DS did the first one at 9 months and is now in the RFS sequence and he's 18 months.

In regular lessons they try to teach to kick their legs, and "swim" but not like the ISR.  The ISR lessons use a certain technique that reinforces the things they need to do and that kind of stuff.  It's actually amazing!

Thanks, I'm checking it out now, this is the first time I hear of these lessons, all the moms I know do regular!!!

  • An acquaintenance just went through this with her child and is a rabid fan of the ISR program. And yes, it's pricey.  I found an instructor who does it for $85 a week (8 week session), but that is still nearly $700. I am not sure if I am going to do it. I live in Florida -- I have to be honest and say that if I lived somewhere where there were not pools and lakes everywhere, I would not invest in this kind of class.
