What does thrush feel like?

I'm 8 weeks pp, and I ebf. For the past 2-3 days, I've had painful shooting jolts in my nipple (not my whole breast). It feels like a stabbing pin feeling. DD doesn't have any "white things" in her mouth anywhere, but I've read that they don't always get that.

If this is thrush, do I go to my ob? Her pedi.? Both?

TIA!

Re: What does thrush feel like?

  • For me, thrush felt like someone was simultaneously rubbing broken shards of glass in my nipple and stabbing me in the breast. It was a deep shooting breast pain. Do you get it just when you're nursing or other times too? I would get it all the time - regardless of what I was doing.

I would make a trip to your OB. My LO's pedi wasn't well versed in nipple thrush. You want someone who knows how to treat it as it's super persistent. If you do have thrush, your LO will need to be treated too (even if she doesn't show obvious signs of having it).

  • I had a similar sensation....stabbing pains while nursing and very sore nips (almost couldn't stand to have clothes touch them sore).  They were also really shiny looking, like there was plastic on them.

Call the OB and they will diagnose and treat you, but I also had to call the pedi and get medicine for LO.  Evidently only one person can be symptomatic so your baby may not have the white patches.  Also, be sure to sterilize your pump parts often while you are treating (if you use a pump at all).
