never heard this before ... re circ..

My little nephew was circumsized the other day (2 wk old) and his uncle thought it was necessary to post it as his FB status (i think that's a little odd, but w/e)... anyway it started a huge pro/con circ debate in his status thread... and several ppl commented that if you don't circ, he would have to do it as an adult if he wanted to join the military.

Now i know there is NO way this is possibly true, but i can find anything "official" online to share with the posters to prove it.

anyone care to help me educate these folks?

Re: never heard this before ... re circ..

  • I don't have very strong feelings on this topic BUT... really?  seriously?  THAT is the argument?  Can't people leave an infant's penis alone and not debate it in a Facebook status, of all places?
  • LOL. So not true.

I don't think they'd officially spell out something so silly: "It is not required that you be circumcised before entering basic training."

  • It used to be true. Like for WWI. It was thought to cut down on VD.

  • The miliary does not require circumcision.  Not in the US anyway.

They encouraged it (although they did not expressly require it) during WWII under mistaken belief that it would prevent infection, but discontinued that when they found that the operation caused more complications than leaving foreskins alone.

Adult circumcision can be performed under local or regional anesthesia. Medical indications for this procedure include phimosis, paraphimosis, recurrent balanitis and posthitis (inflammation of the prepuce). Nonmedical reasons may be social, cultural, personal or religious. The procedure is commonly performed using either the dorsal slit or the sleeve technique. The dorsal slit is especially useful in patients who have phimosis. The sleeve technique may provide better control of bleeding in patients with large subcutaneous veins. A dorsal penile nerve block, with or without a circumferential penile block, provides adequate anesthesia. Informed consent must be obtained. Possible complications of adult circumcision include infection, bleeding, poor cosmetic results and a change in sensation during intercourse.

Hmm...I would SO have your back and DH was in teh military but I can't think of a legit source you could hammer at them. They are crazy! LOL. Also-I think it is cool you finally have a pic in your siggy...I have been wondering what you looked like since the tri days! LOL.
  • Um.... no.  My dad was in the army during WWII and he is not circ'ed.  He was born in Germany, and boys were not routinely circ'ed there.

  • As an active duty Army doc (who knows the medical qualification/retention regulations and does vasectomies for active duty) I can tell you it's not a requirement.  It is true that our cir rate for infants is high, but I don't have stats for military or national.
5/08- blighted ovum, spont ab; 2/20/09- epi, VAVD, Girl! breastfed 24mo; 10/10- blighted ovum, spon ab; 12/10- no fetal pole, Cytotec; 11/20/11- unmedicated SVD, Girl! breastfed 18mo; 11/7/13- unmedicated SVD, breastfed 18mo; 2/11/16- unmedicated SVD, exclusively pumping to at least a year.

  • That's a total myth- a common- but a false one.  The only thing they make you cut is your hair!

To add to the confusion- there are a lot of lies and misinterpretations of things that happened in the past... for example- in WWII a Dr. may have treated a STD infection with a side order of circumcision... when the soldier gets home- Do you think he's going to tell his sweetheart that they cut him because he got the clap from a French hooker?... or maybe say something about how it was required?  That's how myths like that get started (and by the way- you can't cure a STD with circumcision)- but that didn't stop them from doing it.

  • I read your post to DH and he started laughing.  He's in the military.  He is not circumcised.  As the pp put it, the only thing the military cuts is your hair :)

ETA: YAY!!!!!!  I can post again :)
