XP: 8-month old tilting head to one side?

Hi Ladies,

DS will be 8 months old in a couple of days. For the past 4 days he has been leaning his head to one side. Not all the time, but it seems almost like he is feeling something in his ear and is bringing it to his shoulder to scratch it somehow. He does it maybe once or twice an hour. I took him to the doctor yesterday to check for an ear infection and everything was fine, however the doctor didn't see him doing the head-tilt thing. I thought maybe it was teething related (DS still has no teeth), but the doctor also looked in his mouth and didn't see anything (I can't either when I look). He has been a bit cranky, and I've given him Humphrey's which seems to help. Any idea what this could be? Could it be teething related? Is he just exploring & doing something new? Should I take him back to the doctor? Sorry for all the questions, but I could use some advice!

Thanks for reading! :)

  • Our LO was doing the same thing a couple weeks ago.  Our doctor sent him to opthamologist to make sure he wasnt seeing double.  So it could possibly be vision.  Other than that I dont have any advice.  GL!

Thanks for your response. Did everything turn out okay? Was it just a phase?

  • My DD did this around the same time your child is doing it. She would tilt her head to the side and then smile at us. If we would do it back she would put her head back up. It was more of a game for her. She hasn't done it for about 2 weeks now.
  • My daughter was doing this, and also sometimes her one eye seems to go in.  She is seeing a pediatric opthamologist in a couple of weeks.  My dr. checked her for tortacolis and she doesn't have that.  He says it might just be her and no worry at all, but because I sometimes feel that her eye turns in (even though he didnt see it) he is sending her anyway.  I might just bring him to the opthamologist if I keep seeing him do it :)

  • DD also did this around 9 months.
  • Thanks for the replies! He seems to be doing it less today, so I will just keep an eye on it for now. I'll take him back to the doctor if it's still going on in a week. Thanks again!
  • If she's doing what my DD around thaat age, I think it's a game. Maybe I'm a negligent mom, but a medical problem never occurred to me. She'd tilt her head to the side and look at me. I'd tilt my head to the same side and look at her, she would laugh. Then I'd tilt my head all the way in the other direction and she'd laugh more. She still does it from time to time, mostly when she is in her highchair. I thought it was just about seeing the world from a different angle.
