Weird interview questions

This morning I had an interview for a design position.

I was interviewed by 5 different people (talk about tiring).
One of the people that was interviewing me asked the following questions:

1) What was your favorite subject in high school?
2) What was the last book you read, and why did you choose it?
3) If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
4) What is your favorite tv show and why?
5) What is your favorite movie and why?

I looked at him puzzled, but still answered the questions. I felt like I was in 4th grade essay class. lol
Are these questions unusual to you?

Re: Weird interview questions

  • Yeah, these are stupid.  I know a lot of people think that these sort of questions show your critical thinking skills or whatnot, but they can be answered by monkeys.  What does the book you last read really do with design work?  Nothing.

My friend had an interview question like, "If you were a zebra, would your stripes help you blend in or make you stand out?"  She thought it was so clever.  Barf.

You have GOT to be kidding me...
I think I would seriously laugh if someone asked me that.

  • sounds like he took them off a "what to expect in an interview" website, like he didn't know what to ask so he just searched google.  i think those questions are pointless except to show you are well-rounded and can think on your feet (although those aren't huge "think on your feet" type questions).

    Ahhh...maybe so.
I didn't see the point of those questions. The only one I didn't answer right away was the "What was the last book you read" question. I haven't read a book for the fun of it in a very long time, so, I told him the last school book I read. lol

  • I used to have to do group interviews at my old job and though I asked all the normal interview questions I did ask each prospective job seeker what there favorite movie was.  It was a good ice breaker...  it helped ease the nerves.  I don't get the point in asking all weird questions though!

  • The worst question I ever had was:  "If you were a fruit, what type of fruit would you be and why?"

I can't remember what I came up with.  Someone I knew said that I should have picked kiwi, because it's sweet but out of the ordinary.
