This is a little girl in my daughters class. The mother refuses to let the teachers shorten it to "Naya." They must use her full name.
The child is 2 and cannot really decide what she wants to be called. I do not think that the teachers should decide what the child should be called, but the parents did not want the teachers or children to call her "Naya." Nayaquatha is a mouthful for children to say.
Why should the teachers decide what the child is called? If the kid wants to be called Nayaquatha, so be it.
Oops...

Now on the other end, I think telling the KIDS what they can call her is way out of line. The teachers should call her what the parents want (I am a teacher, I have dealt with this before) but it is stupid to expect the kids to do it.

I completely agree, you cannot really help what the children call her, but parents should call her by what the parents want.
I tend to think Naya is cute but I agree....parents should be the ones that make that decision. However, I am a daycare provider and I would never "make" the children say her full name. Half the time my kids don't say my FULL name and it's Ashley. :-)
Maybe the full name in her language means "Beautiful Trashcan" and Naya is the "Trashcan" part. I wouldn't want my child being called Trashcan all day either!
But seriously:
I'm not saying she should have considered the nicknames, but this is exactly why I AM considering the nicknames.
Re: Another great name...not!
That is quite the name!
