Purple gums?

I think DD is getting one of her 1 year molars. She'd been acting pretty miserable the last few days; pulling her ears, drooling, crying for seemingly no reason. But I couldn't figure out which tooth was coming in. Until Sunday. DD was looking up at the celing fan and had her mouth open, and I saw a purple splotch on her bottom left gum where a molar would be. Yesterday it was way more swollen and purple. Anyone else's LO have purplish spots on their gums, and if so, how long did it take the tooth to finally break through? Poor DD is pretty unhappy. TIA!
