Hurricane season begins today!! Checklist for babies/toddlers?

And with 14-23 named storms for this season, we're not taking any chances and getting oru supplies ready and put together early.  I hate waiting until a storm is announced and then Publix and Costco looksl ike a madhouse.

Anyway, in case anybody needs a checklist:  here you go!

The baby checklist is very small, is there anything you guys recommend for newborns and toddlers?

We formula feed, do you think it's better to get separate nursery water or are regular jugs of water ok? (we use a special formula and they don't come in ready to feed containers)

What about toys/food for toddlers?

Also, don't forget to do all the baby laundry before a hurricane is set to hit, just so you at least have clean clothes for them in case the water or power is out.

anything else?

Re: Hurricane season begins today!! Checklist for babies/toddlers?

  • I'm new to hurricane and baby stuff, so I don't have anything helpful to add, but thanks for posting the checklist!
  • When we went through this with a kid on formula we made sure to have a spare case of Zephryhills for them to mix with the powder.  You also want to stock up on diapers and wipes.

I've found that more than anything for toddlers you need entertainment!  We get hot and bored but the kids are even worse!  We get a few new toys and hide them until we're stuck inside.  We also get puzzles and books since they're time consuming.  Make sure you have enough to snack on and drink and you have some sort of safe lighting (not a candle) to keep the LO from being scared.  After the storm passes you can do a lot outside if your still without power and hopefully you'll at least have a breeze.  Bubbles, water balloons, sidewalk chalk... stuff to keep them occupied.  HTH!

  • Dawn, lighting that is not candles is a great suggestion!

  • We have been stuck without power before during hurricane season and are always super duper prepared. I love watching people go to Publix and the gas station like wild animals while we sit back and wait :)

Like Dawn mentionned bubbles, chalk, etc... outdoor stuff. We also have cute flashlights for the kids put away for when we need them.

As far as food, just think anything that doesn't need to be refrigerated. Tuna, Canned spaghetti and meatballs ( I hate those but my kids like them!), even those ramen noodles in a cup (if you ahve a way to hear water!). Also buy extra bread that you keep in the freezer.

  • Thanks for posting the checklist!

As for lights, Ikea has solar powere LED lamps.  You just put them outside all day and they collect solar power.  You can turn them on manually, but they also have a setting in which they turn on automatically when the sun goes down.  They are perfect indoors or outdoors.

ugh, abby refuses to eat this stuff.  a blessing and a curse, i guess, but she will not eat canned/processed foods.  she can even tell the difference between canned peas and frozen ones.  she's not so much picky in the stuff she eats, but it has to be fresh.  ugh.  lol  she won't even eat kraft mac and cheese!  she throws it on the floor.  i mean, if that's all we have, she's going to have to eat it at some point, i just forsee her not eating for a few days b/c of that lol.  God knows I've tried to get her to eat stuff when we're out on the road, not even fast food, but stuff that's been cooked at a restaurant... she outright refuses.  she only eats raw veggies and fruit.  she's such a weird kid.

what do you guys do about milk?  she's still drinking whole milk... powdered milk or the milk cartons of 2% milk?  which do you think tastes better?

  • Thanks for posting this Jenny - I usually get ready early in the season, but as busy (and tired) as I am lately, I'm sure I'd end up at Publix with the rest of the "wait till the last minute" people.

And I def am looking forward to everyone's reply about baby stuff...  We usually don't use candles either - we have a few battery operated lanterns that we have for camping that give off a great amount of light - check at Target or Sports Authority for inexpensive ones...  We also have a 2 burner camping stove that we actually used with Katrina and Wilma.  Here's hoping that this storm season isn't as bad as they predict :-)

Oh and for those of you with pets, don't forget about them when buying hurrican supplies...
