did you have oversupply/forceful let-down?

if you had this problem, what type of symptoms did you and your LO exhibit and how did you fix it?

Re: did you have oversupply/forceful let-down?

  • I do have forceful let-down and I can tell because when DD latches on she breaks the latch and almost sounds like she's choking on milk.  The only thing I've done to help is to expel a little milk before she latches on.  But I don't do it that often.  I usually end up choking her.

  • lo struggled at the boob and would unlatch a lot. She also had a lot of green poops.

To fix over supply, I block fed. So she would eat off one side two feedings in a row. That fixed over supply.

  • Yep. Once LO latches on he doesn't have to suck. It just pours out into his mouth. It makes him cough and gag. He pulls off my nipple and cries. I pump A LOT of milk. I only pump 4-6 times a day and I still end up with 40-50 ounces per day.

LO will do a couple sucks and pull off constantly. Like pp said, I'll feed him off the same side twice in a row. He is also full after only 10-15 mins on one boob, and the only comparison I have is my sister's kids, who ate for 45 mins and 30 mins per feeding. Sometimes when LO pulls off his mouth is full of milk because it rushes in so fast.

  • I had seriously forceful letdown (like, shooting several inches!) and oversupply issues.  I got engorged really easily and the first time I pumped, when DS was a week old, I got 5 oz out of one breast!  This was after feeding, too!  I knew there was a problem when DS would choke and pull away from my nipple and it would be spraying out or he would clamp down on my nipple which hurt like the dickens.  There were many occasions when he would refuse to nurse anymore after only a few minutes on the boob.

I tried everything that was recommended by kellymom.com and  by the lactation consultant at the hospital and nothing worked for me.  Nursing against gravity, pumping before feedings, feeding on one side only...nothing worked.  I've moved on to exclusively pumping now and it's worked out much better for us even though it's difficult.  I still produce like crazy even though my breasts are being drained more regularly and efficiently now.  Hopefully you find something that works for you!!

  • I'm dealing with this on only one side right now, I have a call into the LC.  When feeding on the right DD gulps and chokes and stops eating after 10 minutes or so.  She has only recently started spitting up like crazy after (not enough hindmilk) and having some green poops.  Yet I'm still underproducing on the left, she's never satisfied after eating on that side.  Also when I pump I only get 2-2.5 oz on the left, which is about what she takes from a bottle, but I get up to 5 oz on the right.
