For moms who bottlefeed...when to switch to medium/fast flow nipple?

I exclusively breastfeed, except for the rare occasion when I have to be away from DS for a few hours and he needs to be fed by DH or a grandparent. So, I am not super familiar with the bottle. I noticed that the bottles I use, Playtex Ventaire, has a slow flow nipple. When should I switch it to a medium/fast flow nipple? How will I know? Or is there a general rule that most people go by. Thanks!

  • It should say on the package of nipples. Next time you're at the store you can take a look. I use Dr. Brown's bottles and I think I'm supposed to switch at around 3 months to the next size up.

Thanks! I will do that. I just noticed that it said "slow" the other day and wasn't sure what that was all about.
  • If you're breastfeeding you can stay at slow as long as you want.  It's not like your boobs get faster the day they turn 3 months.  If LO is fighting the nipple then go up.  I think the number on the nipple is more for FF/EPers.
  • I accidently used a fast flow nipple on DD's bottle the other day, and it was way to much for her.  She couldn't swallow as fast as it was coming out, and the milk was running down her chin and neck.

  • Thanks! That's what I was curious about...if it was necessary to get a faster nipple when mostly BFing.
