I received a phone call from my worried grandmother this morning to tell me that there will be a lunar eclipse on June 26. Her orders were to stay inside, not look at the eclipse, and tie a key or a safety pin over my belly on the inside of my shirt. Of course I told her I would and not to worry, but I had to ask why. She said that lunar eclipse could cause a cleft lip on my unborn babies. I find this hard to believe, but I am following her orders just in case there is any merit to this myth. I know it sounds crazy, but I will do all I can to protect my babies. I read on a few websites that this myth has been traced back to the Aztecs. I was just wondering if anyone else has heard of this, or any other myths related to lunar eclipse.
Re: Lunar eclipse and pregnancy
You're grandmother is well meaning, but a lunar eclipse will not cause a cleft lip for your child just as drinking one thing or another will not magically change your child's gender, hair color, etc.. Those things are determined at conception/during development and have nothing to do with the moon.
