Ugh...found a lump

We were at camp yesterday and DH was handing me DS so I could put him in his carseat. I turned him around and while I was doing so I saw a lump behind his ear near his hairline. At first I just thought it was a bite of some sort but its definitely not. The lump is under the skin and is hard like a bone. The lump does not move and it does not seem to hurt him at all.

I'm going to bring him to the Pedi in the morning.

  • Try not to worry! It's probably just a cyst or something!

  • That's actually a really common spot for cysts and swollen glands/lymph node. Both my kids have gotten little pea-sized lumps (hard, dont move) from time to time in exactly the same spot as you've described. In fact, DS has one right now.

Of course it's best to get it checked if you're worried, but try to stay calm and remind yourself that it's pretty common to get hard lumps right there.

  • It sounds like a cyst. I would definitely get it checked out, but try not to worry!

  • Thanks ladies. I've been freaking out since I found it yesterday. I then googled - which I should have NEVER done. Ugh.

  • Sounds to me like a small lymph node which is common. Hope the appointment with the pediatrician goes well:)

This exactly...my ds had one a few months ago and it was just a swollen lymph node.  Good luck and hope all goes well.

  • Try not to worry :)  It's probably either a cyst or a lymph nodes as PPs have said. HOWEVER, don't touch or push on it too much. You could get it infected that way and then LO could be in pain from it. Infected cysts hurt like a beyotch.

My first thought was swollen lymph node.  I noticed a lump in my DS's neck last summer when he turned his head to the side.  I freaked, but it turned out to be just a lymph node and it was so visible because DS was so skinny.  Try not to worry like the others said.  Also, did you check around that area to see if he actually did get bitten or scratched?  His lymph system could be responding to some trauma in that area.

My thought as well.  My older 2 kids have them a few times.

    Thanks everyone, really.

I noticed the lump yesterday (Sunday). I did notice a bug bite Saturday near his left ear (the bump is behind his right ear). When he came up to me Saturday the bug bite was bleeding a little which is why I even noticed it. Perhaps the two are related.

You know what? Now that you mention the bug bite part...My nephew had a bug or spider bite behind his ear in April and one of his lymph nodes back there got HUGE! They had my SIL use a warm compress on the bug bite and then treat it with neosporin, because it was obviously infected. The node took close to a month to go down:)
