Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Pumping ? (from 3rd Tri Board)

I hope someof you won't mind answering this for me. I have a 4 year old and with him I didn't pump much at all. We moved when he was 5 weeks old (hubby in the Army) and my pump wasn't a great one. But when he was 3 months I got really sick and long story short bc of meds I was on he had to go from breastmilk to formula. I hated it. I vowed to pump and store if I had another baby. So here's my questions....

I got a new pump (medela- nice one.. so excited!) but once again we are moving when she is probably less than 2 months. Fun, huh? SO I am gussing I can't store much before that move :( Anyway how do you work in your pumping to store sessions? When do you pump inbetween feedings? I'm just not sure how that will all work so my milk will still be good for when she needs it too.

 Thanks!!!

  • At first I pumped after each feeding and it really helped my milk supply and I could put whatever milk I pumped in the freezer since LO had just eaten. Now that I have a good supply and TONS of milk in my freezer I pump in the morning after LO's first feeding because my boobs are so full and that goes in the freezer and I sometimes pump before I go to bed so my boobs don't get too full. If we are out and I give LO a bottle I pump when I get home because I'm usually ready to explode!

  • I pump after every other feeding (I did it after every feeding for the first 2 weeks to increase supply & because we were supplementing with it).  I pump as soon after the feeding as I can.  Oh, and I pump at both of the "night" feedings (the 2-3 am or whatever, and the early morning one).  We have a serious stash that I have to figure out what to do with if we wind up not needing it!!

By the way, I pumped for only 5 minutes at first (after we quit supplementing), to make sure there was enough for him.  Then I gradually increased it, to 8, then to 10 minutes.  Now at 15 minutes.  Your body will respond by producing the extra for the pumping session, in addition to what he needs.  It might be a rough couple of days though if you just pump a ton right away--I know my DS has had a few feedings where I've pumped an extra lot at the feeding before that, and he just screams because he isn't getting enough.  Then you can give pumped milk, or just keep feeding him until he gets enough (which is usually what I do).  Your body will adjust though.

  • thanks for the info!! :)
