EPers

How often do you pump? I have been pumping every 3 hours during the day and every 5-6 at night since LO was born and now I have a HUGE oversupply. After she is fed for the day I still freeze 10-16 ozs and I have 2 freezers full of milk.  Like pushing 2000 ozs.  I would love to pump less often but I want to be sure I still have enough milk for LO.

It sounds like you're getting plenty so you could probably extend the hours between your daytime pumps, or pump for a shorter amount of time.  It sounds like you have a huge supply, so I wouldn't worry about that!  I have less than 100oz in the freezer and I barely remember to use it before the three months is up.  If you start using more than you are pumping, you could just go back to your current schedule, since your body usually adjusts to what you are trying to produce.

  • Personally I wouldn't cut the number of pumping times AT ALL- your baby is going to really increase her intake in the coming months. ( I EP'ed for a full year)

I would suggest however shortening your pump sessions by a little to try to ease off on how much you are pumping- by a couple of ozs or so. Around 4 months my DD was taking upwards of 60+ oz a day (just so you know it really CAN shoot up) and she didn't drop that amount until around 9 months when she was eating mostly solids and finger foods (even then it was around 30oz)

you can always stop pumping sooner (and give frozen BM) and still meet your BM goal.

  • Between 6 weeks and 6 months BF baby intake stays pretty level so I wouldn't worry about demand going up.  Since you have so much stocked up, I would feel comfortable extending time between sessions.

I pump 5-8 times per day and I don't pump during the night, but I also don't pump enough to keep up with LO.  During the day I pump about every 3.5 hours.  I have to be pretty desperate to get up to pump in the middle of the night.  I think I'd experiment first with dropping night pumping.

I am totally jealous.  I have never produced that much (and I have no idea how you keep up with pumping so frequently).  Kuddos to you

Agreed! DD's intake has been the same the past month and a half. I have a huge supply and am slowly trying to cut down my pumping time . I figure if DD starts eating more than what I'm pumping I can feed her from my freezer stash while I try to rebuild my supply.

  • DS has taken the same amount per feeding since he was about 6-8 weeks old. He has his moments where he's going through a growth spurt and will drink 6 oz at a time, rather than his normal 4-5 oz.

Since I went back to work when DS was 2 months old, I have pumped 5-6 times a day with no night pump. I had so much milk that I dropped pumps in order to keep my sanity. I still pump 10 oz four times a day, plus my morning pump averages about 15 oz. I usually freeze 10-15 oz a day still.

DS #1 born January 2010. DS #2 due June 2014.

  • keep in mind- everyone that told you that their baby's intake didn't increase is less than 5 months old- their intake DOES increase.
