Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Tummy time questions...

Our little dude is only a little over a week old but we do spend some 'tummy time' each day... however, he mostly just conks out.  Is this pretty standard for his age?  Should I be doing anything differently?

He has a fairly strong neck already and lifts it off for a few seconds each time when he's been on my chest for awhile.  Is that at least counting towards his tummy time and neck strength?  When should I start to see a more alert baby during actual tummy time?

My LO wouldn't do tummy time at all until he was 5 months old and then he would roll to his tummy constantly.  Don't stress about it.  As long as you are giving him the opportunity to hang out on his belly every now and then, he'll be fine.

  • The majority of both of our LO's tummy time for the first months consisted mainly of their time spent lying on us.  DD doesn't seem to mind it as much as DS did, so she will hang out for 10 minutes or so a few times a day.  I think the alert and active tummy time began a couple months in for both of them.

  • My pedi said time on your chest counts as tummy time up until a month old. So it sounds like what you're doing is fine! I actually have put LO down on a mat for tummy time yet, just my chest.

  • We had a PT eval for my son for his DS and she said to give him tummy time in different positions, including while laying on your chest.  Every different position helps them to work different muscle groups, so it's definitely beneficial.  We started tummy time right away, and he would usually just lie there or fall asleep in those first couple of weeks.  Maybe around 2 weeks or so he started to try lifting his head...it helped once he started focusing on this black & white toy that we had because he would try to look at it in front of him.  Just keep doing what you're doing!
