How do we get a social security number for LO?

My husband and I were talking how we get an a SSN?  Is this something the hospitals social worker does?

I'm sure it varies, possibly by state. It was taken care of for us in the hospital; all we did was fill out a form and 2 weeks later we got her card. I'm in Michigan.

You could call the hospital (or your social security administration) and ask.

fill out the paperwork in the hospital and then they mail you the SS card.

We filled out paperwork at the hospital.  It took close to 5 weeks before we got it though.

they took care of it for us at the hospital. one of the papers we had to fill out had a box that said "check if you want your baby to get a social security number" and then his card was sent to us a few weeks later.

we did our paperwork in the hospital while doing the birth certificate info. in NC it takes up to 12 weeks to get it...we just got the card yesterday.
