Is sleeping on the side a SID risk?

DS sleeps better on his side.

Re: Is sleeping on the side a SID risk?

  • I don't know the actual answer, but I think the risk is when they sleep on their stomachs. DD rolls onto her side a lot at night, and I don't move her.

  • DD has been rolling to her side since she was 3 days old. Dr. said if she's strong enough to roll to her side, then it's ok. The highest risk is when they sleep on their bellies. Studies show if they're placed on their bellies before they roll they wouldn't be able to roll themselves back if they're not able to breathe.

  • We always put DD to sleep on her back but she always ends up on her side.

My DD has slept on her side since like, day 2. She sleeps under a bili blanket right now and that sort of keeps her on her side too. I've tried moving her to being flat on her back and she just turns right back over.

Not true. Back or side is fine.

DS sleeps on his side during naps.  We put him in a sleep wedge so he can't roll over.  I think it's a risk if he does roll over on his face and cant roll back over.
  • My pedi said it's not as great a SIDS risk as belly-sleeping, but not as safe as sleeping on their backs.

Suffocation deaths are not the same as SIDS, BTW. Your baby can suffocate in a blanket or bumper. Or they can just stop breathing for unexplained reasons -- that's technically a SIDS death, from my understanding.

Part of the reason they think pacifiers help protect against SIDS is that if a baby sucks on one while sleeping, they don't sleep as deeply, and for some reason that seems to be related to SIDS. So it's kind of a double-edged sword, IMO -- you want your baby to sleep, but not too deeply. So if they sleep more deeply on their sides, then yes, it's a bigger SIDS risk.
